Gold or silver: what decides it
Undertone decides the metal. Skin with a yellow-gold cast beneath it comes alive in gold; skin with a pink-blue cast sharpens in silver. The right metal evens out your skin, while the wrong one shines alone and leaves your face dull.
But the rule is only a starting point. Two warm types wear very different golds. Temperature picks the color of the metal; value and chroma pick its finish and weight.

The vein test and its limits
Green wrist veins pointing to gold and blue veins to silver is a hint, not a verdict. Vein color shifts with lighting and skin thickness, and olive or neutral skin often reads as neither.
The more direct check is the metal itself: alternate gold and silver near your face in daylight and keep the one that leaves your skin even. Even that reads only temperature, one of four axes. Value, chroma, and contrast set your actual range.

Rose gold and mixing metals
Rose gold sits between the two camps. Copper warmth softened with pink makes it kindest to light, soft types, and it is the safest pick for neutrals who find both gold and silver merely fine.
Mixing metals works, with one anchor rule: keep the pieces nearest your face (earrings, necklace) in your base metal, and mix freely on hands and wrists where your face's tone is not at stake.
